Selective Undergrounding in the Sunshine State (Video)
Weather-related outages remain one of the leading causes of power outages in the U.S. After weathering hurricanes Matthew (2016) and Irma (2017), Florida Power & Light launched the “Storm Secure Underground Pilot Program.” This pilot program strategically targets neighborhood lines (“laterals”) that were impacted significantly during severe weather events and undergrounds them.
During storms, these underground laterals perform 85% better than overhead. Day-to-day, underground laterals perform 50% better than overhead.
In the latest video from Public Utilities Fortnightly, Alex Revel talks with FPL’s vice president of Distribution Operations, Mike Jarro, about the pilot program’s success. Mike also gives some helpful advice to anyone who is new to selective undergrounding.
